The winners of the 2007 Key Art Awards were announced this weekend. Here are the nominees and winners in the poster categories, together with a little bit of commentary.
COMEDY POSTERS
I’m not a big fan of the Nacho Libre poster, but otherwise a very strong category. I love the clever visual puns, and the yellow Little Miss Sunshine poster with the characters running after the bus is iconic by now.
ACTION-ADVENTURE POSTERS

A weak category this year. The V for Vendetta poster does stand out and I agree completely that it’s the best of the group.
ANIMATION POSTERS

Renaissance
Monster House

Again, not a very strong category this year. The Ice Age Poster is very good tough, and pretty cute.
DOCUMENTARY POSTERS
Sketches of Frank Gehry

Last year’s documentaries had some truly amazing posters. I love them all, but the one for An Inconvenient Truth is truly something else. As a matter of fact, the marketing for that film was uniformly superb.
DRAMA POSTERS

Little Children

Pan’s Labyrinth

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

A very good selection, and the Hard Candy poster is great and many people love it. But for me both the poster for Perfume and the poster for Pan’s Labyrinth were more beautiful and more memorable.
HORROR POSTERS

The Hills Have Eyes
Pulse

Descent (Winner)

Saw III gets two entries. And it probably deserves it too, since all the posters for the movie, and for the series in general, have been amazing. I also love the poster for Pulse. But the poster for The Descent is a most deserving winner. Truly memorable, and truly creepy. And the film is pretty good to boot.
TEASER POSTERS
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion

Borat

Crank (Winner)

The Crank teaser is pretty good, but I think I like Borat more.
If you are interested in buying some of these posters, you can get most of them from Allposters or from Movie Poster Warehouse.
Thanks to IMPAwards and to Posterwire for pointing out these awards, and also for being two excellent sites in general.

“The Descent” is NOT deserving of the win, because it is a direct RIP OFF of the photograph by Philippe Halsman (in collaboration with Salvador Dalí) called “In Voluptas Mors”. That’s from 1951. If you don’t mind a little artistic nudity, go ahead and google it out and see for yourself. RIP OFF

Graham is right. The (NOT SAFE FOR WORK) picture can be found here:

The marketing team and the producers of the film don’t even credit this photograph, so I’d find it rather distasteful that they just rip it off. Aside from the woman on top, the poses are identical. Effectively used, perhaps, but certainly not original.
Yeah, The Descent poster is not very original, as you guys point out. But I still think using this image was a very good choice for this film, and the execution was really effective.
Some great posters there, really liked An Inconvenient Truth and Little Miss Sunshine.

the movie was alright too …
nice posters but I don’t agree with any of your comments… seems like you’re stuck in the 60’s/70’s with a post-modernist outlook on current art. Kinda sad really.
There is no such thing as ‘Weak’ that only applies if there is a standard that should be reached. An example is the Eistedfodd (a celebration of Welsh culture) it sometimes happens that no poem/song/exhibition/recital reaches the level demanded of 1st place and thus no 1st prize is awarded. To apply that to movie posters is ludicrise.
The Superman Returns poster is excellent the V for Vendetta almost looks like a NAZI propoganda poster.
Just my opinion…
The Halsman/Dali picture was also used in the Silence of the Lambs poster.
The Hard Candy poster is my favorite btw.
The Desent poster is a rip-off of a Salvador Dali image.

Hmmmm rather undermines the judging when The Salvador Dali skull images wins. I can assume one of the following:
* the judges have no art background — no validity to their judgement then in my opinion and the prize is meaningless.
* They recognise the copy and don’t care as the image is appropriate. A distinct possibility, after all the womans pose at the top is NOT different as claimed by another poster but there is a woman missing, the number of women being significant. In anycase, if submitting a barely altered piece of easily recognised art is rewarded with first place — the prize is meaningless.
Utter nonsense post modernist rubbish.

Since we’re all talking about how Dali was ripped off, I’d like to point out that (while it isn’t plagiarism) the Superman Returns poster looks similar to another Dali painting: Christ of Saint John of the Cross

In any case, that pose is Jesus-y.
