This poster for the film biography of Joy Division’s singer Ian Curtis takes the classic approach of showcasing the character at the center of the biography, and of focusing mostly on his face. This is not unlike what we saw in the Elizabeth: The Golden Age poster, for example.
Of course, this is the kind of approach that leads itself to endless fascinating variations, and I quite like this one. It’s a beautiful photograph that manages to be quite expressive. And the whole image sets somewhat dark mood which I think is probably appropriate for the subject matter. It’s not the kind of mood that is going to be appealing for everybody, but a movie about a guy who committed suicide at the age of 23 would never manage to have a very broad appeal anyway, no point pretending otherwise.
