I didn’t much like the original Chronicles of Narnia film, but I thought the marketing materials were excellent. They properly conveyed a sense of wonder and an epic scope, but managed to still make the movie seem accessible. And I mean the “I can take my kids to see this” kind of accessible.
This poster for the new film follows the same footsteps. It’s perhaps a little darker, but not intimidatingly so. So it shouldn’t scare anybody away. There are enough fantasy/magical elements to keep things interesting and a hint of armies and wars in the background. Again, not enough to scare the young ones, just enough to make the story look interesting, and perhaps also important.
There are a lot of fantasy themed films coming to the big screen in the upcoming months and years, and I feel that many of them will have a hard time standing out from the crowd. Prince Caspian shouldn’t be one of those tough, since it already has a pre-built audience due to the books and the first film. So it’s marketing won’t need to be all that aggressive and creative. All it has to do is to remind people of the first movie and make this seem like a progression from that. With that in mind, I think this first poster does what it needs to do.
