The Other Boleyn Girl Poster

The Other Boleyn Girl Poster

How is it possible that there is a film being made that stars Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana and I knew nothing about it? Well, I’m not sure how that happened, but I think the poster does a good job of getting me up to speed. Portman and Johansson as sisters in a stylish looking period film. Got it.

What I find more interesting about this poster is that the movie is called The Other Boleyn Girl, which refers to Mary Boleyn (played by Johansson), and the film is based on a book by the same name which centers on the life of Mary. However, the poster puts the two Boleyn in the same standing. As a matter of fact, Anne Boleyn (Portman) even gets more space. The tagline (The only thing that could come between these sisters … is a kingdom) further sets this up as a film about the two and their relationship, and not about the life of one of them specifically.

Maybe the movie differs from the book and doesn’t really tell the story from Mary’s perspective or focus more on her life, which makes the title a little inadequate but is otherwise not really a problem. Or maybe they just decided that it would be better to sell the movie as starring Portman and Johansson, instead of selling it as a movie starring Johansson with Portman as a supporting player. I wonder which it is.

According to this imdb synopsis (said to be spoilerish but not much), the two girls are given equal footing in the film.

A sumptuous and sensual tale of intrigue, romance and betrayal set against the backdrop of a defining moment in European history, “The Other Boleyn Girl” tells the story of two beautiful sisters, Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary (Scarlett Johansson) Boleyn who, driven by their family’s blind ambition, compete for the love of the handsome and passionate King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Both women shall share the King’s bed, but only the one whom Henry loves the most shall rise to the throne and take power as his Queen of England. One sister shall fail, and the other will pay a high-price for her success: her life. But which sister shall it be?

History shows it was Mary and not Anne who initially curried favor amongst the royal set. So in her day, Anne was probably considered the “other” sister. Ponder that…

I’d heard about this just recently as well. What an awful title.

The poster is decent. Kind of modern type for a period piece, so that’s interesting, as is the fact that Bana’s left hand creeps in on the right side and settles on Portman’s chest. Looks weird.
